Renay Groustra is a Cape Town based professional mountain biker, who has a passion for racing and riding his bike in interesting places. He is also a passionate surfer, sporadic trail runner, kitchen pirate, coffee snob, and bike fitment specialist.

Bike fit

A good bike fitment is essential for all cyclists. A bike fitment from an experienced bike fitter will improve comfort, increase efficiency and result in an improved performance on the bike. Every cyclist whether new or experienced will have limitations on the bike, as a human being is not symmetrical, while a bicycle is. It is therefore also important to minimise these limitations to decrease injury risk.

Our fitment specialist Renay Groustra runs his own fitment studio within our store. Renay has over 6 years of bike fitment experience as well as 16 years of racing experience. He prides himself in using the most recent and up to date scientific bike fit methods to ensure a dynamic fitment outcome for each rider and carries this through with the professionalism learnt through his years as a pro rider on the World Cup circuit.

Renay works in conjunction with Beyond Performance, a Physio and Biokinetics practice at Trail and Tar to prodive solutions for riders with issues that go further than bike fit.

Renay is an expert in road, mountain bike and Time Trial bike fit, whether for Olympic or Iron Man distance’s.

Comprehensive Fitment: 90 minutes – R 850

This is a comprehensive dynamic fitment that includes:

  • Full rider interview including full body measurements as well as flexibility assessment and leg length corrective measures.
  • Predictive bike fit report.
  • Measurement of contact areas and corrective measures taken including, foot angle and footbed analysis, cleat positioning, saddle choice and angle recommendations as well as bar and grip setup.
  • 5 Point dynamic assessment of the rider interacting with their bike and corrective measures taken.
  • Assessment of brake lever and shifter positioning.
  • Suspension set up for mountain bikes.
  • E-mail report of full bike fitment and final measurements.

The focus of this fitment option is to provide the ultimate value possible to the client by focusing on all the key areas of a bike fitment and offering corrective solutions to the rider.

Standard fitment: 35 minutes – R 450

  • Basic cleat positioning check
  • Standard saddle fore/aft adjustment
  • 5 Point dynamic seat height adjustment
  • Handlebar, brake lever and shifter setup
  • Basic suspension setup

It was over 16 years ago that Renay first started riding his bike. Over the first few years he refined his skills, and as the passion grew, began to enter the realm of competitive race. All was not straight forward. He learned the hard way and made many mistakes of his own.

Renay enjoyed some great success as a junior, but still struggled to bring it all together as often as he would have liked to. The turning point happened when he started to add structure to his training, planning his season and setting goals. This was all due the involvement with his coach and mentor Dr Jeroen Swart, who now owns Science to Sport, SA’s leading group of coaches.

It is under this banner that Renay is able to offer coaching services of his own as well as offer insight learned through his many years of experience racing both locally and abroad to other aspiring athletes

It’s fair to say that over the years racing World Cups, World Champs, Ultra Marathon’s, Cape Epic’s and Road Racing that he has learnt a few things about structuring your training, peaking properly, tapering, and also the mindset needed to race big events..

Category 3 – R 750p/m

Category 3 coaching provides the athlete with a personalised training plan based on training status, time constraints and goals.

Feedback is taken monthly and training is adjusted accordingly.

Performance tests are required every 6 months to measure training adaptation and guage progress.

Category 2 – R 1500p/m

Category 2 coaching provides the athlete with a personalised training plan based on training status, time constraints and goals.

Weekly fatigue monitoring in the form of DALDA scores.

A performance management chart is also utilised using RPE based TSS and heart  rate TRIMP or power files.

Weekly interaction with me and training programs updates based ton training data analysis.

Performance tests are required every 6 months to measure training adaptation and gauge progress.
